Division of Information Technology

The West Haven Police Department Division of Information Technology (DOIT) was created by Chief Kelly in May 1997 to address the increased technological needs of the department.

Sgt. Joseph Wynosky (right) and Detective Joseph Vecellio (below) are assigned to this division.

Besides maintaining all of the department's computer systems, DOIT manages numerous servers which provide networked resources throughout the police department, in-car laptops (mobile data terminals) and satellite offices.  In addition, DOIT oversees and maintains the radio communications systems, telephone systems, audio/video recording systems, and building security.  The DOIT division is also responsible for the building and repairing of computers for the department.

Phase 5 COMPLETED

  •  Transmitting of digital photo imaging to the patrol vehicle's laptop computers via our mobile data system.  This allows the mobile officer to view photographs from our in-house booking system on their laptops with just a key stroke.  The DOIT division also implemented the Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) machine to the department this past summer.  With the implementation of the AFIS machine, fingerprints are electronically submitted to the national FBI fingerprint database for matching in just minutes.  Using this system, the department has already identified several individuals wanted both in and out of state on outstanding warrants based on their fingerprint match.

CAD/RMS upgrade:  IN PROGRESS

  • The CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) and RMS (Record Management System) will be converted to a graphical user interface.

In addition, the old booking system which consisted of an Access 97 database, is being merged into the new system.  This implementation will allow officers to look up booking photos for old arrests as well as new arrests.
