Public Service Unit

Public Service Officers serve part-time and are appointed by the Chief of Police to supplement the regular police force.  They assist the West Haven Police Department in carrying out its mission by fulfilling roles that do not require a gun and law enforcement arrest powers.

A Public Service Officer has many responsibilities.  They assist regular police officers at accident and incident scenes; observe and supervise people at special events; provide patrol services at assigned areas such as parades, concerts, and firework displays; interact with the public; man traffic control posts on Sundays for church traffic and other non-enforcement duties.

A Public Service Officer can be any active citizen willing to devote their time to the department.  Public Service Officers must be at least eighteen years of age.  We have a very diverse background of current Public Service Officers from those who seek a career in public safety, those in the active work force and contributing to their community, and mature individuals who enjoy helping out.

If you have an interest in helping out in the community, we encourage you to apply!

An online application for the Public Service Unit can be downloaded from our "Forms" page.
